Rare KV-Series Prototype
The T-150 was an experimental Soviet heavy tank developed as an improved and more heavily protected version of the KV-1. Featuring thicker armour, a modified turret, commander’s cupola and powerful 76.2 mm gun, it represented Soviet efforts to create an even more formidable breakthrough tank.
Only one prototype was completed, making the T-150 a genuine rarity. Its connection to the famous KV family and its distinctive angular turret make it an unusual centrepiece for prototype collections, Soviet testing grounds and alternative-history dioramas.
The Story Behind the Tank
At a snow-covered Soviet testing ground, engineers gather around the T-150 after another trial. One crewman examines the tracks while another records temperatures and mechanical readings. In the distance, a heavy tractor waits in case the prototype needs assistance.
The tank’s thicker armour promises greater battlefield protection, but its increased weight places additional strain on the engine, cooling system and transmission. Every test reveals something new—sometimes an improvement and sometimes another problem to solve.
The T-150 tells the story of military development before mass production: one experimental machine, a determined crew and a long list of engineering challenges.
Historical Background
The T-150 was developed during 1940 as part of a Soviet program to improve the KV-1 heavy tank. Combat experience and testing had encouraged designers to explore greater armour protection and increased engine power.
The prototype received armour up to approximately 90 mm thick and a more powerful 700-horsepower V-5 diesel engine. It retained a 76.2 mm F-32 gun but introduced a revised turret with a commander’s cupola—an uncommon feature on early Soviet tanks.
The added armour increased the vehicle’s weight to around 50 tonnes. During testing, the prototype experienced engine overheating and mechanical problems, demonstrating the difficulty of improving protection without sacrificing reliability.
The T-150 did not enter mass production, but experience gained from the project contributed to continued development of the KV heavy-tank family.

Interesting Fact
Only one T-150 prototype was built. This makes it considerably rarer than most production tanks and an excellent choice for modellers wanting something different from the familiar T-34 or KV-1.
Fun Fact
The entire historical production run of the T-150 could fit into one parking space—although at roughly 50 tonnes, it would probably ruin the pavement!

Painting and Weathering Ideas
Finish the tank in Soviet military green with dark steel tracks and subtle wear around the hatches, turret edges and suspension. A lightly weathered appearance suits a testing-ground vehicle, while heavier mud and grime can suggest extended trials.
For a winter scene, add snow around the tracks and apply a temporary whitewash. Pair the model with engineers, tools, measuring equipment and a recovery tractor to create a convincing prototype-testing scene.
