T-26-4 Soviet Artillery-Support Tank – RARE VARIANT
Expand your Soviet armoured collection with the T-26-4, an experimental artillery-support development of the familiar T-26 light tank. Its unusual turret and heavier weapon give this rare variant a distinctive profile, making it an excellent choice for enthusiasts of Red Army vehicle development before and during the World War II era.
Historical Role
The T-26-4 was developed to provide Soviet infantry formations with mobile, close-range artillery support. Rather than concentrating on anti-tank combat, its intended role was to engage field positions, machine-gun nests and other obstacles that could delay an advance. It represents Red Army efforts to increase the firepower available on the proven T-26 chassis.
Distinctive Appearance
The vehicle is immediately recognisable by its enlarged turret and short-barrelled artillery weapon. Compared with the better-known gun-tank versions of the T-26, the T-26-4 has a heavier, more imposing upper profile while retaining the compact hull, narrow tracks and exposed suspension characteristic of the wider T-26 family.
Variant Differences
Developed from the standard T-26 light tank, the T-26-4 retained the established chassis but replaced the usual smaller gun turret with a larger turret designed around a 76.2 mm artillery piece. This change created the model’s most visible differences: a broader turret, a short prominent barrel and a silhouette focused on fire support rather than conventional light-tank duties.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for experimental Red Army vehicle collections, early-war themed displays and scenes exploring the development of Soviet armoured doctrine. It can serve as a focal point in dioramas, add unusual military traffic to model railways, appear in historically inspired wargaming displays, or provide collectors with a less commonly represented member of the T-26 family. It receives the RARE VARIANT badge because it depicts the experimental artillery-support T-26-4 rather than the standard production tank.
Fun Fact
The T-26 family originated from the British Vickers 6-Ton design, but Soviet engineers developed it into numerous specialised forms, including command, flame-throwing and artillery-support vehicles such as the T-26-4.
