T-26 Model 1940

The Soviet T-26 Model 1940 represents a later production configuration of one of the Red Army’s most widely used light tanks. Developed from the established T-26 family, this version combines its familiar infantry-support role with the angular turret and revised details associated with final production vehicles. The LATE WAR badge identifies this as a later T-26 production configuration from 1940, rather than suggesting that the design originated during the closing stages of World War II.

Historical Role

The T-26 was designed primarily to support infantry, engaging field positions, machine-gun nests and lightly armoured vehicles. Its 45 mm gun gave it useful firepower for a light tank of its generation, while a coaxial DT machine gun provided close-range defence. Model 1940 vehicles served within the Red Army during the opening period of fighting on the Eastern Front, when the increasingly outdated T-26 remained in frontline formations despite limited protection and mobility.

Distinctive Appearance

This model is distinguished by its compact riveted and welded hull, narrow tracks, prominent running gear and later conical turret with sloping sides. The centrally mounted gun, turret rear overhang, paired headlamps and simple fenders create the unmistakable silhouette of a late-production T-26.

Variant Differences

The Model 1940 developed from earlier T-26 light tanks while retaining the same basic chassis and 45 mm armament. Its most visible modelling difference is the later sloped-sided turret, replacing the more angular cylindrical turret seen on earlier single-turret versions. These revisions reflected continued Soviet efforts to refine protection and production details without creating an entirely new vehicle.

Modelling Uses

An excellent choice for Eastern Front dioramas, Red Army vehicle columns, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors of Soviet armour. It can be displayed in an infantry-support scene, on a wartime road march or alongside other early World War II vehicles.

Fun Fact

The T-26 family originated from the British Vickers 6-Ton design, but Soviet engineers developed it into numerous specialised and progressively revised configurations.
