T-26S (1939)

Recreate a distinctive late-production version of the Soviet T-26 light infantry tank with this detailed Blueprint to Print 3D model. The T-26S (1939) combines the familiar compact chassis and twin-bogie suspension of the T-26 family with the angular turret and hull features associated with its final pre-war development.

Historical Role

The T-26 was developed to support Red Army infantry with mobile machine-gun and cannon fire. Armed with a 45 mm gun and a coaxial DT machine gun, the 1939 version could engage field positions, infantry and many contemporary armoured vehicles. T-26 tanks served during the Winter War and remained widely deployed during the opening stages of the Eastern Front, although their light protection and ageing automotive design left them increasingly vulnerable.

Distinctive Appearance

The T-26S is immediately recognisable by its compact proportions, narrow tracks, paired road-wheel bogies and prominent cylindrical commander’s cupola. Its conical turret has sharply angled sides, giving it a more modern silhouette than earlier cylindrical-turret T-26 tanks. The offset turret, angular upper hull and rear engine compartment create an unmistakable Soviet early-war profile.

Variant Differences

Developed from the better-known single-turret T-26 Model 1933, the 1939 version retained the established running gear and 45 mm armament rather than introducing a completely new mechanical design. Its principal changes centred on the conical turret and revised sloped upper-hull plates, intended to improve protection and update the tank without replacing the existing T-26 production system. These angular surfaces are the clearest differences for modellers.

Modelling Uses

This model is ideal for Winter War scenes, early Eastern Front dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors of Soviet armoured vehicles. It can be shown advancing with Red Army infantry, positioned on a defensive road, loaded for rail transport or displayed as a standalone historical miniature.

Fun Fact

The T-26 family originated from the British Vickers 6-Ton design, but Soviet production and repeated redesigns transformed it into one of the Red Army’s most recognisable pre-war tanks.
