T-27A Tankette (1932)
Recreate an early chapter in Soviet armoured development with this detailed T-27A Tankette model. Dating from 1932, this compact vehicle represents the Red Army’s formative mechanisation period, when small tracked machines were used to explore new reconnaissance, support and training roles. The RARE VARIANT badge highlights the T-27A as a distinctive light tankette type from this important transitional era.
Historical Role
The T-27 family was developed from the British Carden-Loyd Mk VI tankette concept and adapted for Soviet manufacture and operational requirements. Operated by a two-man crew, it served primarily as a reconnaissance, liaison and infantry-support vehicle. Although increasingly obsolete by the beginning of the Second World War, surviving T-27s remained useful for training, communication and secondary duties, with some still present during the Red Army’s early-war operations.
Distinctive Appearance
The T-27A is instantly recognisable by its extremely low profile, narrow tracked running gear and compact, turretless hull. Its angular superstructure, paired crew hatches and forward-mounted machine-gun position create a purposeful silhouette characteristic of interwar tankette design. These features make the model especially effective beside larger Soviet tanks, where its remarkably small dimensions become immediately apparent.
Modelling Uses
An excellent choice for early Soviet mechanisation scenes, training-ground dioramas and early-war Eastern Front settings. It can also add unusual military traffic to model railways, provide a compact vehicle for wargaming displays, or serve as a distinctive addition for collectors of Soviet armour and interwar tracked vehicles.
Fun Fact
The T-27’s small size made it easier to transport than conventional tanks, and Soviet forces experimented with carrying tankettes beneath large aircraft as part of early airborne mobility trials.
