T-34-100 – Soviet Experimental Medium Tank

Bring an unusual chapter of Soviet armoured development to your collection with this detailed T-34-100 model. Developed during the final phase of World War II, the vehicle combined the proven T-34 chassis with a much more powerful 100 mm gun installation. It receives the RARE VARIANT badge because it represents an experimental attempt to mount a 100 mm gun on the T-34 platform rather than a standard Red Army production vehicle.

Historical Role

The T-34-100 was investigated as a means of increasing the firepower of the T-34 family against heavily armoured late-war opponents. Its intended battlefield role remained that of a mobile medium tank, but with a weapon capable of delivering greater anti-armour performance than the T-34-85’s 85 mm gun. The project explored whether the existing chassis could accommodate this heavier armament without requiring an entirely new tank design.

Distinctive Appearance

The vehicle retains the familiar sloped hull, broad tracks and low profile associated with the T-34. Its defining feature is the long 100 mm gun projecting from a reworked turret arrangement, giving the tank a noticeably more powerful and forward-heavy silhouette. The contrast between the recognisable T-34 hull and enlarged weapon makes this experimental design immediately distinctive.

Variant Differences

Developed from the T-34-85, the T-34-100 replaced the standard 85 mm armament with a 100 mm gun and required changes to the turret installation to accommodate the larger weapon and its recoil. For modellers, the principal visual differences are the longer barrel and altered turret configuration. The variant existed to test whether greater late-war firepower could be achieved while retaining the established T-34 chassis.

Modelling Uses

An excellent subject for Eastern Front dioramas, experimental vehicle line-ups, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors of uncommon Soviet armour. Its familiar chassis also makes it ideal for side-by-side comparison with standard T-34 variants.

Fun Fact

The T-34-100 programme demonstrated how difficult it was to fit a substantially larger gun into an existing medium-tank design, with turret space, recoil and chassis limitations all influencing development.
