T-34-85 (1944)
Recreate one of the Red Army’s most recognisable late-war medium tanks with this detailed T-34-85 (1944) model. Combining the proven mobility and sloped armour of the T-34 chassis with a larger turret and more powerful 85 mm gun, it became a defining Soviet armoured vehicle of the final campaigns of World War II.
Historical Role
Introduced to counter increasingly well-armoured German vehicles, the T-34-85 served as a versatile medium tank on the Eastern Front. Its 85 mm armament provided greater anti-tank capability than earlier T-34 versions, while its mobility and broad production supported fast-moving Red Army offensives. During 1944, it played an important role in armoured breakthroughs, exploitation operations and infantry support as Soviet forces advanced westward.
Distinctive Appearance
The T-34-85 retained the characteristic low hull, sharply sloped glacis plate, wide tracks and rear-mounted engine deck of the T-34 family. Its most distinctive feature was the enlarged, rounded turret with a longer 85 mm gun, prominent commander’s cupola and room for a three-man turret crew. External cylindrical fuel tanks, large road wheels and broad track guards further contribute to its unmistakable late-war Soviet profile.
Variant Differences
The T-34-85 developed from the earlier 76 mm-armed T-34. It largely retained the established chassis and automotive layout but introduced a wider turret ring, a substantially larger turret and an 85 mm main gun. The revised turret allowed the commander to focus on battlefield awareness rather than also serving as gunner, improving crew efficiency. Visually, the larger turret, long gun barrel and commander’s cupola clearly distinguish it from earlier T-34 variants.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for Eastern Front dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors. It can represent Red Army armoured columns, infantry-support actions, urban fighting or late-war advances across Eastern Europe.
Fun Fact
The T-34-85’s larger turret accommodated three crew members, giving the commander a dedicated role and improving coordination compared with the earlier two-man turret arrangement.
