T-34-85 D-5T — RARE VARIANT
Capture an important transitional stage in Soviet armoured development with this detailed T-34-85 D-5T model. Representing the early production configuration armed with the 85 mm D-5T gun, it offers a distinctive alternative to the more familiar ZiS-S-53-equipped T-34-85 of the later war years.
Historical Role
The T-34-85 entered Red Army service to provide greater firepower while retaining the mobility and practical design of the T-34 series. Its larger, three-man turret improved crew efficiency, while the 85 mm gun gave Soviet tank units a stronger response to increasingly well-armoured German vehicles and fortified positions on the Eastern Front.
Distinctive Appearance
This version combines the T-34’s characteristic sloped hull, broad tracks and low profile with an enlarged turret and long 85 mm gun. The commander’s cupola, rounded turret form and D-5T gun mounting create the recognisable appearance of an early T-34-85, making it visually distinct from both earlier T-34-76 tanks and later standardised examples.
Variant Differences
Developed from the T-34 medium tank and closely related to the better-known standard T-34-85, this early version used the D-5T rather than the later ZiS-S-53 gun. Its principal modelling difference is the early gun installation, including the associated mantlet and turret-front arrangement. The configuration existed to bring an effective 85 mm-armed T-34 into production before the ZiS-S-53 became standard.
Modelling Uses
Ideal for Eastern Front dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors, this variant is particularly suitable for scenes depicting the Red Army during the transition to improved late-war armament. The range of scales supports everything from compact layouts to highly detailed display pieces.
Fun Fact
The D-5T was not unique to the T-34-85: a version of the same 85 mm tank gun was also used in the Soviet KV-85 heavy tank.
