T-34-85 M1944

The T-34-85 M1944 represents the mature late-war form of one of the Soviet Union’s most important armoured fighting vehicles. Combining the T-34’s proven mobility and sloped armour with a more powerful gun and enlarged turret, it is an essential subject for Red Army collections, Eastern Front scenes and historically themed displays.

Historical Role

Introduced as Soviet forces increasingly encountered heavily armoured German vehicles, the T-34-85 served as a versatile medium tank capable of exploitation, infantry support and armoured combat. The M1944 was typically armed with the 85 mm ZiS-S-53 gun, giving it greater anti-armour capability than earlier T-34 variants. Its three-man turret also improved crew efficiency by allowing the commander to concentrate on observation and tactical control rather than loading or aiming the weapon.

Distinctive Appearance

The vehicle retained the T-34’s familiar low hull, sharply sloped glacis plate, wide tracks and prominent Christie-type road wheels. Its defining features are the larger, rounded turret, long 85 mm gun barrel and commander’s cupola. Cast texture, external fuel tanks, tow cables, spare track links and practical stowage can add further character to a late-war Soviet finish.

Variant Differences

The T-34-85 developed from the earlier T-34-76. Its principal changes were an enlarged turret ring, a three-man turret and an 85 mm main gun in place of the earlier 76.2 mm armament. These improvements created the visibly broader turret and longer gun profile while addressing the need for better firepower and more effective crew operation.

Modelling Uses

This model is well suited to Eastern Front dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors of World War II armour. It can represent a tank advancing with infantry, operating in an armoured column, moving through a ruined settlement or displayed as a standalone late-war Soviet vehicle.

Fun Fact

The T-34-85’s usefulness extended far beyond 1945, with the design remaining in service internationally for decades after the Second World War.
