T-34 Model 1940 with Interior

Representing one of the earliest production forms of the celebrated Soviet T-34 medium tank, this detailed Model 1940 captures the purposeful appearance of a Red Army vehicle at the beginning of the Eastern Front campaign. Its UNIQUE DESIGN badge recognises the inclusion of interior detail, offering additional depth for open-hatch displays, workshop scenes and close-up collections.

Historical Role

The T-34 Model 1940 combined sloped armour, wide tracks and effective mobility in a balanced medium-tank design. Entering Red Army service shortly before the Soviet Union was drawn into the Second World War, it was intended to support mobile operations, engage enemy armour and help break through defended positions. Early T-34s revealed both the potential of the design and the practical challenges of wartime manufacture, maintenance, crew coordination and limited visibility.

Distinctive Appearance

This early T-34 is distinguished by its sharply sloped glacis, compact two-man turret, prominent road wheels and broad tracks. The Model 1940’s early turret fittings and relatively short L-11 gun profile give it a noticeably different silhouette from later T-34/76 versions. Internal features make the model especially effective with turret or hull hatches displayed open.

Variant Differences

Developed from the pre-war A-32 prototype lineage, the Model 1940 was the first production expression of the T-34 design. Compared with later T-34/76 variants, it used the early 76.2 mm L-11 gun and retained the original four-speed transmission arrangement. Its early gun installation, turret details and hull fittings provide the clearest modelling distinctions; subsequent variants introduced incremental improvements in armament, reliability and production efficiency.

Modelling Uses

Ideal for Eastern Front dioramas, military model railways, wargaming displays and specialist collectors, this model can represent an advancing tank, a halted column or a maintenance scene. The interior-detail treatment rewards careful painting and weathering, particularly on larger scales.

Fun Fact

“Model 1940” is largely a retrospective description used by historians and modellers; Soviet wartime records did not always divide T-34 production into the neat model-year categories familiar today.
