T-34/76 Model 1943
Recreate one of the Red Army’s most recognisable wartime tanks with this detailed T-34/76 Model 1943. Combining sloped armour, mobility and effective firepower, this Soviet medium tank became a defining presence on the Eastern Front and is an essential subject for World War II collections.
Historical Role
The T-34/76 served as a versatile medium tank, supporting infantry, engaging enemy armour and exploiting breakthroughs across difficult terrain. Armed with the 76.2 mm F-34 gun, the Model 1943 fought during a period of increasingly intense armoured warfare. Its balanced design allowed Soviet formations to employ it in large-scale offensive and defensive operations.
Distinctive Appearance
The Model 1943 is especially recognisable by its sharply angled hull, broad tracks and prominent hexagonal turret. Twin circular turret-roof hatches create a distinctive silhouette when open, while the forward-mounted gun, rounded mantlet and compact hull proportions give the vehicle its characteristic purposeful appearance. Production details could vary between Soviet factories, making this version particularly interesting for historically themed displays.
Variant Differences
Developed from earlier T-34/76 versions, the Model 1943 retained the established rear-engine layout, Christie-type suspension and F-34 main gun. Its principal modelling distinction is the larger hexagonal turret that replaced earlier turret forms, providing improved internal space and production practicality. Later examples could also feature a commander’s cupola. The variant reflected continuing wartime efforts to simplify manufacture while incorporating operational improvements.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for Eastern Front dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors of Soviet armoured vehicles. It can represent a tank on the advance, supporting Red Army infantry, moving through a ruined settlement or assembled with other vehicles in a wartime armoured column.
Fun Fact
With both circular turret hatches raised, the Model 1943’s outline is often nicknamed “Mickey Mouse” by modellers because the open hatches resemble a pair of large ears.
