T-37 Amphibious Tank

Recreate an unusual chapter in Soviet armoured development with the T-37 Amphibious Tank. Designed before the Second World War and retained in Red Army service during its early stages, this compact light tank combined mobility, reconnaissance capability and the ability to cross calm inland waterways. It carries our RARE FIND badge because it represents an early Soviet amphibious light tank seldom seen alongside better-known wartime armour.

Historical Role

The T-37 was intended primarily for reconnaissance, liaison and light security duties rather than direct combat with enemy tanks. Its amphibious capability allowed Red Army units to negotiate rivers and lakes where bridges were unavailable. Light armour and machine-gun armament limited its battlefield resilience, but its small size made it useful for scouting and communications. By the opening phase of the Eastern Front, the design was already becoming outdated, although surviving vehicles continued to serve where available.

Distinctive Appearance

The vehicle is immediately recognisable by its compact, boat-like hull and diminutive offset turret. The driver’s position sits to the left, while the turret and its single machine gun are positioned to the right. Broad side pontoons contributed to flotation, and the rear-mounted propeller and rudder reveal its amphibious purpose. These features create a noticeably different silhouette from conventional Soviet light tanks of the period.

Modelling Uses

This model is ideal for early-war Red Army dioramas, river-crossing scenes, reconnaissance columns and abandoned-vehicle settings. Smaller scales are well suited to model railways and larger wargaming displays, while the larger editions offer greater presence for detailed painting, weathering and waterside scenic work. It is also an appealing subject for collectors interested in lesser-known Soviet armour and the development of amphibious fighting vehicles.

Fun Fact

Unlike tanks that required separate flotation equipment, the T-37 was designed to enter the water using its hull for buoyancy, with a propeller providing movement and a rudder controlling direction.
