T1E1 Heavy Tank

The American T1E1 Heavy Tank captures one of the United States’ most ambitious armoured development projects of the Second World War. Created as part of the programme that produced the M6 heavy tank family, the T1E1 combined imposing proportions, substantial armament and an experimental electric transmission.

Historical Role

Developed after the rapid expansion of armoured warfare in Europe, the T1E1 was intended to provide heavy firepower and protection for assaults against fortified positions and enemy armour. Although evaluated by the U.S. Army, it did not enter combat. Changing battlefield requirements, transport difficulties and confidence in more mobile medium tanks limited the need for such a large vehicle.

Distinctive Appearance

The T1E1 is immediately recognisable by its tall, broad hull, heavy suspension and large rounded turret. Its unusual turret armament paired a 3-inch gun with a coaxial 37 mm gun, creating an asymmetrical and unmistakably experimental appearance. The prominent tracks, cast hull contours and multiple weapon positions further emphasise its early American heavy-tank character.

Variant Differences

The T1E1 belonged to the same development family as the better-known M6. Its principal distinction was a General Electric transmission in which the petrol engine powered a generator connected to electric traction motors. It retained the family’s paired turret guns and cast-hull form, so its most important differences were mechanical rather than dramatic changes to the turret. The variant existed to assess electric drive as a practical solution for controlling a vehicle of this weight.

Modelling Uses

This model is ideal for World War II prototype collections, American armoured-development displays and alternate-history wargaming displays. It also makes an impressive centrepiece for workshop, proving-ground or transport dioramas. Smaller scales suit model railways and large vehicle scenes, while larger scales offer collectors more opportunity to highlight the turret, suspension and hull details.

Fun Fact

Unlike conventional tanks with a direct mechanical transmission, the T1E1 used its engine to generate electricity for motors driving the tracks—an unusually advanced concept for an American wartime heavy tank.
