T26E1 Super Pershing

Bring an imposing piece of late-war American armour to your collection with the T26E1 Super Pershing. Developed to improve the Pershing’s ability to confront heavily armoured German vehicles, this distinctive tank combined an exceptionally long 90 mm gun with field-applied protection. Its unusual silhouette makes it an eye-catching subject for World War II displays and miniature collections.

Historical Role

The Super Pershing was deployed to Europe during the final months of World War II and operated by the US 3rd Armored Division. Classified as a heavy tank at the time, it was intended to engage well-protected enemy armour at greater ranges. Its combat career was brief, reflecting both its late arrival and the rapidly approaching end of the war in Europe.

Distinctive Appearance

The vehicle is immediately recognisable by its very long 90 mm gun barrel, prominent external equilibrator springs above the mantlet, large turret and added frontal armour. Field modifications created a rugged, improvised appearance, with extra steel protection fitted around the hull front and gun mantlet. These features give the Super Pershing a markedly different profile from a standard Pershing.

Variant Differences

Developed from the T26E1 Pershing design, the Super Pershing used the high-velocity T15E1 90 mm gun in place of the standard M3 weapon. The longer, heavier gun required external balancing equipment and changes to ammunition handling, while additional armour was installed after the vehicle reached Europe. The variant existed to provide greater armour penetration and frontal protection against Germany’s heaviest late-war tanks.

Modelling Uses

This model is ideal for late-war European dioramas, military-themed model railways, wargaming displays and collectors of unusual American armoured vehicles. It works particularly well in advance-to-contact scenes, roadside maintenance settings or displays alongside standard Pershings and other 3rd Armored Division vehicles.

Fun Fact

The Super Pershing’s gun was so long and heavy that conspicuous external springs were mounted above the mantlet to help balance it, creating one of the vehicle’s most memorable visual features.
