T29 Heavy Tank

The American T29 Heavy Tank is an imposing late-Second World War design created in response to increasingly formidable German armour and fortified defensive positions. Although completed too late for wartime service, its immense proportions, powerful armament and unmistakable silhouette make it a fascinating subject for military modellers and collectors of experimental armoured vehicles.

Historical Role

Development of the T29 began in 1944 as the United States sought a heavy tank capable of tackling strong fortifications and heavily armoured opponents. Its intended role was to support breakthrough operations with greater protection and firepower than the M26 Pershing. Armed with a long 105 mm gun, the T29 was designed for direct engagement with enemy armour and hardened positions. The war ended before it could enter combat, but completed vehicles became valuable test platforms for post-war American heavy-tank development.

Distinctive Appearance

The T29 is instantly recognisable by its enormous turret, long gun barrel and broad, heavily tracked hull. Its turret overhangs the hull sides, giving the vehicle a particularly massive profile, while the substantial mantlet reinforces its purposeful appearance. Multiple road wheels, wide tracks and a tall superstructure visually communicate the weight and complexity of this ambitious heavy-tank project.

Modelling Uses

This model is ideal for late-war “what-if” dioramas, proving-ground scenes and displays exploring American experimental armour. It can also form an impressive centrepiece in model railways with military transport themes, wargaming displays, workshop settings or museum-style collections. Larger scales showcase the turret, suspension and armament, while smaller scales are well suited to convoy, depot and rail-loading scenes.

Fun Fact

The T29 belonged to a wider family of American heavy-tank experiments that also included the T30 and T34. These vehicles tested different heavy guns and engineering solutions, helping the United States evaluate concepts later reflected in post-war heavy-tank design.
