T30 Heavy Tank
Bring an imposing piece of American heavy-tank development to your collection with the T30 Heavy Tank. Conceived during the closing stages of World War II, this formidable experimental vehicle combined a massive turret, broad tracked chassis and powerful 155 mm main gun, creating a striking model for military displays and historical scenes.
Historical Role
The United States began developing the T30 as part of a wartime programme intended to counter heavily armoured enemy vehicles and attack fortified positions. Its large-calibre gun was selected for delivering a substantial high-explosive shell, giving the design a strong assault role alongside its anti-armour potential. Although initiated during World War II, the T30 did not enter wartime combat and instead contributed to post-war evaluation of heavy tanks, ammunition handling and large-gun installation.
Distinctive Appearance
The T30 is instantly recognisable by its exceptionally large, rounded turret and thick 155 mm gun barrel. A prominent turret bustle, high hull profile, wide tracks and substantial running gear reinforce its powerful appearance. These proportions make the vehicle particularly effective as a centrepiece, especially when positioned beside standard American medium tanks for scale and visual contrast.
Variant Differences
Developed alongside the related T29 heavy tank, the T30 used the same general heavy chassis and turret concept but replaced the T29’s 105 mm gun with a much larger 155 mm weapon. Powerplant arrangements also differed during development. For modellers, the oversized gun and associated turret details provide the clearest visual distinction, reflecting the T30’s intended role against fortifications and heavily protected targets.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for late-war “what-if” dioramas, prototype proving-ground scenes, model railways with military loads, wargaming displays and specialist collectors of American armoured development. Multiple scales allow it to serve as a compact gaming piece, railway load or highly detailed display model.
Fun Fact
The T30’s 155 mm ammunition was so large and heavy that it required separate-loading components. Experimental handling equipment was evaluated to reduce the demanding work required of the turret crew.
