Tetrarch Mk VII (A17)
Recreate one of Britain’s most unusual World War II light tanks with this detailed Tetrarch Mk VII (A17) model. Compact, distinctive and historically significant, the Tetrarch makes an excellent addition to British armoured vehicle collections. This model carries the RARE FIND badge because only a small number of Tetrarch tanks were produced, with some adapted for service alongside airborne forces.
Historical Role
The Tetrarch was developed as a fast light tank intended primarily for reconnaissance, screening and light-support duties. Armed with a 2-pounder gun, it offered useful mobility and anti-armour capability for its size, although changing battlefield requirements limited its wider employment. Its most famous role came with British airborne formations, where Tetrarchs provided troops with mobile armoured support after landing.
Distinctive Appearance
The Tetrarch is immediately recognisable by its compact hull, small angular turret and prominent 2-pounder gun. Four large road wheels on each side give the running gear a clean, open appearance, while the low silhouette reflects its light reconnaissance role. Its unusual steering arrangement allowed the road wheels to pivot and the tracks to flex, contributing to a particularly distinctive suspension layout for modellers.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for World War II dioramas, including British airborne landing scenes, reconnaissance columns, training grounds and vehicle parks. It also suits period model railways, tabletop wargaming displays and collectors seeking a less commonly represented British tank. The broad range of scales allows it to serve as anything from compact scenic detail to a prominent display centrepiece.
Fun Fact
The Tetrarch became one of the few tanks carried into action by large military gliders. During the Normandy campaign, examples were transported across the English Channel in General Aircraft Hamilcar gliders, giving airborne troops access to light armour after landing.
