Tiger I Ausf. E Early Production
Capture the formidable presence of the Tiger I Ausf. E Early Production with this finely detailed 3D-printed model. Introduced during the Second World War, the Tiger I became one of the Wehrmacht’s most recognisable heavy tanks, combining powerful armament, substantial armour and an imposing battlefield silhouette.
Historical Role
The Tiger I entered service in 1942 and was primarily assigned to independent schwere Panzer-Abteilungen, which could be deployed where additional striking power was required. Armed with the 8.8 cm KwK 36 gun, it was intended to engage enemy armour at long range and support breakthrough or defensive operations. Early-production Tigers saw service on the Eastern Front and in Tunisia, where their armour and firepower made a strong impression despite demanding maintenance and logistical requirements.
Distinctive Appearance
The early Tiger I is instantly identifiable by its tall, angular hull, broad tracks and large, nearly vertical-sided turret. Characteristic early-production features include the drum-style commander’s cupola, rubber-rimmed interleaved road wheels, prominent Feifel air-cleaning equipment at the rear and, on appropriate vehicles, turret-mounted smoke dischargers. The long 8.8 cm gun and box-like superstructure give the tank its unmistakably powerful stance.
Variant Differences
The Ausf. E Early Production developed from the initial Tiger I configuration, originally designated Ausf. H1. Its main armament remained the 8.8 cm KwK 36, while production changes focused on detail refinements rather than a new battlefield role. Compared with later Tigers, early vehicles are most visibly distinguished by the drum cupola, Feifel air cleaners and rubber-rimmed road wheels; later production introduced features such as a lower-profile cast cupola and revised running gear.
Modelling Uses
An excellent centrepiece for World War II dioramas, military scenes, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors’ cabinets. The range of scales supports everything from compact railway layouts to highly detailed armour collections.
Fun Fact
The Tiger’s overlapping and interleaved road wheels helped distribute its considerable weight, but mud and ice could become packed between them, making maintenance difficult in harsh winter conditions.
