Tiger I Ausf. E Late Production
Recreate one of the most recognisable German heavy tanks of World War II with this detailed Tiger I Ausf. E Late Production model. Introduced during the final phase of Tiger I manufacture in 1944, this version combined the vehicle’s formidable silhouette and 8.8 cm KwK 36 gun with several practical production updates.
Historical Role
The Tiger I served primarily with independent schwere Panzer-Abteilungen of the Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS. Its principal battlefield roles were engaging enemy armour at long range, supporting breakthroughs and strengthening threatened sectors. Thick armour and a powerful main gun made it a dangerous opponent, although its weight, mechanical demands and high fuel consumption required careful logistical support.
Distinctive Appearance
The late-production Tiger is distinguished by its broad, slab-sided hull, near-vertical armour, large turret and long 8.8 cm gun. Characteristic late features include the lower cast commander’s cupola, steel road wheels with internal rubber cushioning and the absence of the earlier external Feifel air-cleaner system. Many late vehicles also carried Zimmerit anti-magnetic mine coating, adding a visibly textured surface.
Variant Differences
Developed through progressive refinement of the Tiger I Ausf. E, the late-production version retained the same principal armament and basic powertrain while introducing simplified and improved components. Steel road wheels replaced the earlier rubber-rimmed arrangement, the commander’s cupola was redesigned, and external fittings were revised. These changes reduced reliance on scarce rubber, simplified manufacture and incorporated operational experience without altering the Tiger’s core battlefield purpose.
Modelling Uses
An excellent centrepiece for late-war German dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors. It suits armoured engagements, maintenance scenes, rail-loading settings, defensive positions and schwere Panzer-Abteilung displays alongside suitable infantry, recovery vehicles and support equipment.
Fun Fact
Despite the late-production revisions, the Tiger retained its famous overlapping and interleaved Schachtellaufwerk suspension layout, giving the running gear its dense and instantly recognisable appearance.
