U-boat Type VIIC U-995
Recreate one of the best-preserved German U-boats of the Second World War with this detailed model of U-995. Built as a Type VIIC/41, the submarine entered Kriegsmarine service in 1943 and is an excellent centrepiece for maritime scenes, naval collections and historically themed harbour layouts.
Historical Role
The Type VIIC formed the backbone of the Kriegsmarine’s U-boat arm, conducting commerce-raiding patrols, reconnaissance and attacks against Allied shipping. U-995 operated in northern waters, where U-boats faced severe weather, heavily defended convoys and increasingly effective Allied anti-submarine forces. Its compact ocean-going design balanced range, torpedo armament and underwater performance.
Distinctive Appearance
U-995 features the unmistakable Type VII profile: a long, narrow hull, rounded bow, low casing deck and prominent conning tower. Saddle tanks create the characteristic broadening around the central hull, while periscopes, railings, deck fittings and late-war anti-aircraft platforms add visual interest. Its weathered naval form suits both underway and dockside presentation.
Variant Differences
The Type VIIC/41 developed from the standard Type VIIC. It retained the established propulsion arrangement and torpedo armament but incorporated a strengthened pressure hull and weight-saving measures to improve operational diving depth. Externally, the subtype remained very similar to the VIIC; the most noticeable modelling differences usually come from vessel-specific late-war tower, anti-aircraft and snorkel fittings.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for submarine pens, naval bases, maintenance docks, coastal installations and museum-style displays. It can also provide a striking maritime feature for dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors of Kriegsmarine vessels or Second World War naval subjects.
Fun Fact
After the war, U-995 served with the Royal Norwegian Navy as Kaura. It was later returned to Germany and is now preserved as a museum ship at the Laboe Naval Memorial near Kiel.
