USA 9 inch Dahlgren Cannon – RARE FIND
Recreate a distinctive piece of American naval ordnance with this detailed USA 9-inch Dahlgren Cannon. Designed during the mid-19th century, the Dahlgren gun predates the Second World War and is best placed in a WWII-era scene as a preserved weapon, memorial, museum exhibit or historic dockyard feature rather than front-line artillery. This model carries our RARE FIND badge because the historic Dahlgren naval cannon is an uncommon subject in the modelling world.
Historical Role
The 9-inch Dahlgren was a smoothbore naval gun developed under American naval officer John A. Dahlgren. Intended primarily for warship batteries, it could engage enemy vessels and support operations against shore positions. Its design concentrated strength around the breech, where firing pressures were greatest, while reducing unnecessary weight toward the muzzle. Although associated chiefly with the American Civil War era, surviving guns later became important naval relics and display pieces.
Distinctive Appearance
Dahlgren guns are immediately recognisable by their rounded, bottle-like profile. The substantial breech flows into a curved barrel that narrows toward the muzzle, creating a silhouette very different from the straighter forms of many contemporary cannon. The compact naval proportions, prominent cascabel area and heavy mounting points make it an eye-catching addition to maritime or historical scenes.
Modelling Uses
This cannon is ideal for naval dockyard dioramas, coastal fortifications, museum displays, memorial settings and historic harbour scenes. It can also provide an unusual period detail for model railways, wargaming displays and collectors of American military or naval equipment. In a WWII layout, it works particularly well as a preserved artifact positioned outside a naval establishment, civic building or military museum.
Fun Fact
The Dahlgren cannon’s characteristic curved form led to the enduring nickname “soda-bottle” gun, making its silhouette almost as famous as its naval service.
