Valentine Mk XI
Representing a late development of Britain’s long-serving Valentine infantry tank, the Valentine Mk XI combines the type’s compact profile with improved armament and power. This detailed model carries the LIMITED PRODUCTION badge because the Mk XI was a later and less common member of the extensive Valentine series, making it a distinctive choice for World War II collections.
Historical Role
The Valentine was designed as an infantry tank, intended to support troops with armour protection and steady cross-country mobility. Introduced late in the vehicle’s development, the Mk XI carried a 75 mm gun with a more effective high-explosive capability than earlier 6-pounder-armed versions. By this stage of the war, newer British tanks had taken over most front-line gun-tank duties, and the Mk XI was principally associated with command use.
Distinctive Appearance
The Mk XI retained the Valentine’s recognisable low, compact hull, narrow tracks and exposed suspension units. Its small, angular turret and prominent 75 mm gun create a purposeful late-war silhouette, while the close-set running gear and relatively tall hull sides immediately identify it as part of the Valentine family.
Variant Differences
Developed from the Valentine Mk X, the Mk XI replaced the earlier 6-pounder with the British OQF 75 mm gun and used a more powerful version of the General Motors diesel engine. For modellers, the longer 75 mm armament is the clearest visible distinction. The variant provided improved high-explosive performance while retaining the established Valentine chassis.
Modelling Uses
Ideal for late-war British dioramas, military model railways, wargaming displays and specialist collectors, the Valentine Mk XI can represent a command vehicle, a vehicle moving behind the front line or part of an armoured formation. Its uncommon configuration also adds variety beside better-known British tanks.
Fun Fact
The Valentine family proved exceptionally adaptable: its dependable chassis also formed the basis of vehicles such as the Bishop self-propelled gun and Archer tank destroyer.
