VK 45.02
Explore an ambitious late-war German heavy tank concept with this detailed VK 45.02 scale model. Developed during the Second World War as part of Germany’s search for a more heavily protected and powerfully armed Panzer, the project remained a prototype design rather than a standard Wehrmacht service vehicle. It therefore carries our PROTOTYPE badge.
Historical Role
The VK 45.02 was conceived for the schwere Panzer role, combining substantial armour with a high-velocity main armament intended to engage enemy tanks at long range. Its development belonged to the same broad German heavy-tank programme that produced increasingly formidable vehicles during the later years of the war. Although the design did not enter operational service in this form, it illustrates the competing technical ideas considered during the development of Germany’s next generation of heavy Panzers.
Distinctive Appearance
The vehicle is defined by its broad, angular hull, sloped armour surfaces, large turret and long-barrelled gun. Wide tracks and a substantial suspension profile reinforce its heavy-tank character, while the sharply modelled glacis and compact superstructure give it a purposeful late-war silhouette. These features make the VK 45.02 immediately recognisable alongside production German armoured vehicles.
Modelling Uses
An excellent centrepiece for prototype Panzer collections, alternate-history scenes and German vehicle development displays. Smaller scales are well suited to model railways and compact dioramas, while larger versions provide a strong basis for detailed painting, weathering and display. The model is also ideal for wargaming displays and collectors interested in experimental Second World War armour.
Fun Fact
The designation “45.02” placed the project within Germany’s nominal 45-tonne development class and distinguished it from the earlier VK 45.01 programme. Several design approaches were examined as German engineers sought the preferred layout for a new heavy Panzer.
