Wespe

Bring compact German self-propelled artillery to your collection with this detailed Blueprint to Print 3D model of the Wespe. Developed during the Second World War, this distinctive Wehrmacht vehicle combined a proven tracked chassis with a 10.5 cm field howitzer. Its SPECIAL WEAPONS badge recognises its role as a light self-propelled artillery vehicle built around a Panzer II-based chassis.

Historical Role

The Wespe served as mobile artillery for German Panzer divisions, giving armoured formations fire support that could keep pace with advancing tanks and mechanised infantry. Its 10.5 cm le.F.H. 18/2 howitzer was primarily employed for indirect fire against enemy positions, troop concentrations and defensive strongpoints. Unlike a conventional towed gun, the Wespe could relocate quickly after firing and operate without waiting for a separate artillery tractor.

Distinctive Appearance

The vehicle is immediately recognisable by its compact tracked running gear, forward driving position and tall, open-topped fighting compartment at the rear. The prominent howitzer barrel, angular armour plates and exposed upper gun position create a characteristic silhouette that contrasts sharply with the enclosed turret of the original Panzer II.

Variant Differences

The Wespe was developed from the Panzer II chassis, with the engine repositioned to accommodate a rear fighting compartment and the tank turret removed. In its place, the vehicle carried a 10.5 cm howitzer behind lightly armoured, open-topped protection. These changes transformed an increasingly outdated light-tank platform into mobile artillery better suited to supporting fast-moving armoured formations.

Modelling Uses

An excellent choice for World War II dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors, the Wespe works particularly well in artillery batteries, resupply scenes, roadside columns and field firing positions. Multiple scale options allow it to complement railway layouts, gaming forces or larger display collections.

Fun Fact

“Wespe” is the German word for “wasp”, an appropriately sharp name for a small vehicle carrying a comparatively powerful artillery piece.
