Wirbelwind

Bring a distinctive late-war German Flakpanzer to your collection with this detailed 3D-printed Wirbelwind. Combining the proven Panzer IV chassis with a formidable quadruple 2 cm anti-aircraft mounting, the Wirbelwind offers an unmistakable subject for armoured vehicle displays, battlefield scenes and historically themed layouts. This model carries our RARE VARIANT badge because the specialised vehicle was produced in relatively limited numbers.

Historical Role

Developed during the Second World War, the Wirbelwind provided Wehrmacht armoured formations with mobile protection against low-flying Allied aircraft. Its 2 cm Flakvierling 38 mounting could deliver a rapid concentration of fire while travelling with Panzer units, unlike conventional towed anti-aircraft guns. The vehicle could also engage lightly protected ground targets when required.

Distinctive Appearance

The Wirbelwind is immediately recognisable by its tall, open-topped, multi-sided turret surrounding the four-barrelled Flak mounting. The angular armour protected the crew from small-arms fire and shell fragments while leaving the top open for visibility, ventilation and weapon operation. This unusual turret, set above the familiar Panzer IV running gear, creates a striking late-war silhouette.

Variant Differences

The Wirbelwind was developed from the Panzer IV, replacing the standard tank turret and main gun with a rotating armoured turret carrying the quadruple 2 cm Flakvierling 38. Its most visible differences are the open fighting compartment, sharply angled turret plates and clustered gun barrels. The conversion existed to give armoured formations a tracked anti-aircraft vehicle able to accompany them in the field.

Modelling Uses

An excellent choice for late-war dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and specialist collectors, the Wirbelwind works equally well in armoured columns, maintenance scenes, defensive positions or Flak unit displays. Multiple scales allow it to complement railway scenery, gaming forces and larger showcase collections.

Fun Fact

“Wirbelwind” translates as “whirlwind,” an apt name for a vehicle whose four autocannon barrels created an intense volume of anti-aircraft fire.
