WWII Soviet All-Terrain Military Transport
The ZiS-42 was developed to overcome one of the Red Army’s greatest transport problems: the terrible roads of the Eastern Front. Combining the familiar ZiS truck cab with a tracked rear suspension, it could carry troops and supplies across snow, mud and soft ground where ordinary trucks frequently became stranded.
Its unusual combination of front wheels, rear tracks, timber cargo body and canvas cover makes the ZiS-42 a distinctive addition to Soviet transport columns, artillery positions and winter dioramas.
The Story Behind the Vehicle
A Soviet supply column has been forced away from the main road after heavy snow and abandoned equipment blocked the route. The ZiS-42 slowly pushes through the forest, its tracks biting into the frozen ground.
Under the canvas are ammunition crates, food, fuel and blankets urgently needed by soldiers farther ahead. Two men clear branches while the driver searches for a safe route. It is cold, slow and uncomfortable work, but the supplies must get through.
This model represents the often-overlooked vehicles and crews that kept the Red Army moving through some of WWII’s harshest conditions.
Historical Background
The ZiS-42 was a Soviet half-track developed from the ZiS-5 truck family. It retained conventional front wheels for steering but replaced the rear road wheels with a tracked drive system.
The tracks spread the vehicle’s weight across a larger area and provided improved traction in snow, mud, sand and broken terrain. Several thousand ZiS-42 and improved ZiS-42M vehicles were produced during WWII.
These vehicles transported soldiers, ammunition, food, fuel, engineering equipment and medical supplies. They were also used to tow artillery and carry equipment into areas conventional cargo trucks struggled to reach.
The ZiS-42 was especially useful during the rasputitsa, when seasonal rain and melting snow transformed unsealed Soviet roads into deep mud. It was not an armoured combat vehicle, but its increased mobility made it a valuable part of Soviet transport and artillery units.

Interesting Fact
Some Soviet half-track trucks could be fitted with skis beneath their front wheels for travelling through deep snow, creating an unusual combination of truck, tractor and motorised sled.
Fun Fact
The ZiS-42 had wheels at the front and tracks at the back—because apparently the Eastern Front could not decide whether it needed a truck or a tractor!
The tracks improved mobility, but they did not make it a tank. The driver still had an unarmoured cab, limited speed and a very cold journey ahead.

Painting and Weathering Ideas
Finish the body in Soviet military green with dark metal tracks and a faded khaki, olive or grey-brown canvas cover. Add mud between the track links, snow around the lower body, dark washes around the suspension and worn paint on the doors, steps and cargo panels.
For a winter vehicle, apply an uneven whitewash over the green base coat. For an autumn scene, build layers of wet and dried mud around the tracks and chassis.
