ZU-23 Flak
Recreate a highly recognisable Soviet anti-aircraft weapon with this detailed ZU-23 model. Better known as the ZU-23-2, this compact twin-cannon mounting was developed after the Second World War and entered Soviet service during the Cold War. Although the supplied era classification is World War II, the ZU-23 is historically a post-war design and is best suited to Cold War and later settings.
Historical Role
The ZU-23-2 was designed to provide mobile defence against low-flying aircraft and helicopters. Its twin 23 mm autocannons offered a high rate of fire, while the lightweight towed mounting allowed crews to move and deploy the weapon quickly. It was also frequently employed against lightly armoured vehicles, field positions and infantry, making it a versatile support weapon in Soviet-equipped forces.
Distinctive Appearance
The weapon is distinguished by its closely paired barrels, prominent ammunition boxes and exposed crew positions. Its low-profile carriage incorporates two road wheels that pivot clear when the mounting is deployed, together with stabilising supports and a central rotating platform. Handwheels, sights, seats and the open mechanical structure create an intricate silhouette that rewards careful painting and weathering.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for Cold War military dioramas, airfield-defence scenes, roadside checkpoints and artillery positions. It can also add an unusual military load or static exhibit to model railways. Multiple scale choices make it suitable for tabletop wargaming displays, vehicle collections and dedicated collectors of Soviet equipment. Pair it with a towing vehicle, crew figures, ammunition crates or camouflage netting to build a convincing operational scene.
Fun Fact
Despite being designed primarily for anti-aircraft defence, the ZU-23 became equally well known for engaging ground targets. Its compact construction also encouraged numerous later field adaptations, including installation on trucks and armoured vehicles.
